Kevin asked if we could share the answer to the question as to which country has won at least one medal in each of the Summer Olympics dating back to 1904. The answer is Great Britain.
Two important lessons from yesterday that can be applied to most everything in life. You are never too old to improve and you should play by the rules.
We begin today's Blog with the Walking (fast walking) Relay Mixed Double Competition held yesterday afternoon. Names were drawn to match as many men with women as possible and the good news is that Keith was matched up with our friend Glo.
In total, there were fourteen teams; ten of which were composed of one man and one woman and four teams with two women on each team. They divided the teams into three groups; letter A, B and C with C having the four women teams. The top two winning teams in letter A and the top two winning teams in letter B and the top one team in Letter C would go to the finals. Each team member would fast walk two laps around the ship and they would alternate between person and tag the other teammate each time they came around. Keith and Glo competed in Team B and easily finished in first place so they advanced to the finals.
After group C finished their race, a five minute break was given which gave about a ten minute rest to the team who finished in first place from group C.
The finals were not as easy and at the end of the first two rounds it was very close. Glo fast walked the first and third laps and Keith fast walked the second and fourth laps. They both walked as fast as they could. The good news is that Glo and Keith finished in first place and won the Gold.
Win or lose the whole point of this is to get to know your fellow guests and have a good time and that we did. It was just wonderful that Keith and Glo were on the same team.
We want to note that all of the teams did great and everyone gave it their best. There were people at a wide range of ages and the effort that they put into this was impressive. Those far younger than all of the participants would be wise to stay in shape so that as they get into their 50's, 60's, 70's and even 80's that they are in the best possible shape they can be in. Congratulations to everyone who participated in this event along with all of the other events.
We mentioned the two lessons from the event.
The first is that you are never too old to improve. Keith last competed in this event in 2008 and he was paired with a woman who was a marathon runner so they did win in that event as well. With that said, Keith felt in better shape yesterday than four years earlier and credits the spin classes with strengthening his legs and increasing his endurance. To our spin-it friends from home those spin classes truly pay off.
The second lesson is to play by the rules. The fast walk competition is exactly that; a fast walk. You can walk as fast as those two legs and feet will take you but you cannot run. If it was a running competition then the rules would say that running is permitted. Before the race began the rules were read and it was noted that if you ran then the first penalty would be that you would be stopped for thirty seconds, and the second penalty would be disqualification. Sure enough in the group A competition which we were not in one gent was running and in the final competition one lady did the same thing. Remember the saying that we all learned as children and goes like this; "it doesn't matter whether you win or lose, what matters is how you play the game."

We finished at around 4:30 PM and at 5:30 PM the Thrill of victory Medals Ceremony was held. Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals were awarded to those guests who won in the respective competitions held on February 13, 14 and 15. In total, fourteen events were held including Basketball for Men and Ladies, Golf Putting, Gin Rummy, Walking Relay, Table Tennis Singles for Ladies and Men and Table Tennis Ladies Doubles, Scrabble, Men's Singles and Ladies Singles Shuffleboard, and Cribbage.
During the ceremony the winners for each event are announced and they were called up as the music played and they were presented with certificates and their medals from the Olympians. The two Olympians were great and made the ceremony very special.
Keith was recognized with a Gold for Men's Basketball and Keith and Glo each received a Gold for the Walking Relay.
Medals for Men's Basketball.

Celeste and Bill had organized our get together in Silk Road and also included Becky for our dinner. We enjoyed a great conversation throughout dinner. Once again, Anthony was our waiter. We had sushi, sashimi and for our entree we each had lobster. The food, service and the conversation was great.

We slept very well last evening between the ship rocking us to sleep and Keith being fairly tired from the all of the activities.
Keith was up early and he began the morning in the Fitness Center. During Keith's workout he watched the lecture given yesterday by Olympian Peter Vidmar. It was a terrific talk and one that applies to all walks of life from business to sports to education. He talked about innovation, focus, working hard, setting high goals, practice, and a few other areas that are all keys to success.
Afterwards, Keith had coffee up at the Lido Cafe Anne Marie worked out in the morning. We both enjoyed breakfast in our room as we got ready to visit Fremantle.
During Captain Glenn's talk from the bridge he shared his thought of the day which was another great one.
"You can't reach to the top by sitting on your bottom."
While a shuttle was provided from the pier over to the town of Fremantle we just walked over to the town on our own after verifying directions with, James Coughlin, the Shore Excursion Manager. We walked for several hours. The town is lovely. It has several buildings with beautiful facades. We visited prison that went back to the 1800's and was in-service till 1991. We visited a rugby stadium. Throughout our walk we passed by several churches. We also visited a maritime museum which included several exhibits of shipwrecks some of which dated back to the 1600's. We visited an area of town known for all of Italian Restaurants as many people from Italy immigrated to the town of Fremantle. We also walked through a park and over to an area with lots of fish markets and restaurants.

Hungry Jacks is part of United States Burger King. It went with this name as there was already a restaurant in Australia known as Burger King.
This was part of the park area that we walked through to get over to the Marina home to the Maritime Museum and several seafood restaurants.

When we returned back to the ship, we had lunch in the Crystal Dining Room with Cruise Director Rick Spath. Lunch was great as Keith had a swordfish salad entree and Anne Marie had a greek salad entree and we thoroughly enjoyed our conversation with Rick Spath.
This afternoon Anne Marie walked on the Promenade Deck for an hour and then sat out at the pool. Keith did reading and writing and then met up with Bob and also spoke with some other guests.

Way to go Team Keith!
ReplyDeleteBut why weren't you standing on your hands at the end of the ceremony?
That sushi and sashimi looked so good--drool, drool, drool!
